What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session
Choosing what to wear for your family session is one of the most common sources of pre-shoot anxiety — but it doesn't have to be. With a few simple principles, you'll create a cohesive, timeless look that complements your portraits beautifully.
Start with a Colour Palette
Rather than matching outfits exactly, choose 3–4 complementary tones and build each person's outfit around those. Our favourite palettes for studio sessions include warm neutrals (cream, ivory, blush, taupe) and earthy tones (sage, terracotta, warm brown).
Avoid Logos and Busy Prints
Text, logos, and busy patterns can be visually distracting in photographs. Stick to solids, subtle textures (linen, knit, velvet), and simple stripes or florals if you love patterns.
Layer for Interest
Layers add depth and visual interest — think cardigans, denim jackets, rompers over bodysuits, or a flowy scarf. This also gives you flexibility during the session to mix and match.
Comfort is Key
Your children need to be comfortable enough to move, play, and feel like themselves. If a child is itchy or uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Prioritise soft fabrics and familiar fits.
