5 Secrets to Getting Great Toddler Photos
Toddlers are, to put it diplomatically, not always cooperative subjects. But in our years of photographing little ones aged 1–3, we've learned exactly how to work with their natural energy — not against it. The result? Authentic, joyful images that truly capture your child's personality.
1. Timing is Everything
Book sessions for after a nap and a meal — never when your toddler is tired or hungry. We find mid-morning sessions (around 10am) tend to work beautifully for this age group.
2. Bring Their Favourite Toy or Comfort Object
A beloved stuffed animal, a favourite ball, or a special blanket can be a fantastic prop and comfort tool. It helps your child feel at home in an unfamiliar environment.
3. Don't Force Poses
The best toddler images are candid. We chase light, not compliance. We'll guide your child through play, movement, and exploration rather than asking them to sit still and smile.
4. Let Them Warm Up
We always start with 10–15 minutes of gentle play and exploration before we start photographing. This allows your child to become familiar with the space, the photographer, and the camera.
5. Follow Their Lead
If your toddler is fascinated by the reflectors, let them explore it. If they want to run, we'll chase them. The most genuine images come from genuine moments — and genuine moments come from genuine joy.
